ED 331: Secondary English Fall 2011. Professor Lindsay Ellis. 218 LHH Office hours: Tu/Th 10-11 a.m. and by appointment
Course Description and Goals: This course is designed to reinforce the methods and strategies used in teaching English that you learned in your methods courses. An important goal is for you to see yourself as a member of the profession and to learn about yourself as a teacher by being immersed in the school and classroom culture for a semester. You will have the chance to observe the daily routine of school from the teacher's viewpoint, to observe veteran teachers in practice, and to practice as a teacher yourself, becoming aware of your ability to interact with students and gaining a better understanding of what it will take to carry out the duties of your chosen career. Our Schedule:
* Click on Readings for the week. Click Edit. Add your summaries/responses to the chapters with your name at the end of your section.
Catalogue Course Description: ED 331 Methods and Strategies of Secondary Teaching: Half-day field experience as teacher assistant in a secondary classroom for a minimum of 13 weeks; additional weeks provided for professional development and training to total 15 weeks. Includes two-hour weekly seminars covering content area methodology (with major field advisor) and instructional strategies (with Education field advisor).Late papers: I’ll accept late papers only on a case-by-case basis. In general, I give small windows of opportunity for completion, with grading penalties for all but the most unavoidable circumstances not negotiated in advance. Please see me well before a deadline if you foresee a conflict or are struggling with any of the difficult aspects of writer’s block. Academic Integrity: In accordance with university policy, I expect each student to do original work and not take or receive the efforts of another person on any test or assignment, use unauthorized resources on quizzes or tests, plagiarize, or give/sell other students papers or assignments not authorized by the instructor. You are responsible for making yourself aware of and for understanding the policies and procedures that pertain to academic integrity. To that end, be sure to familiarize yourself with the GVSU Student Code [Section 223.01] related to academic integrity. Furthermore, be sure to reference sources at all times. If you are uncertain about such an issue prior to submission of an assignment, project, or test, please see me or the Meijer Writing Center so we can eliminate that uncertainty. Diversity and Disability: If there is any student in this class who has special needs because of a learning, physical, or other disability, please contact me and Disability Support Services (DSS) at (616) 331-2490. Furthermore, if you have a disability and think you will need assistance evacuating this classroom and/or building in an emergency, please make me aware so that the university and I can develop a plan to assist you. It is the student’s responsibility to request assistance from DSS.
Required Text: Ryan, Kevin and James Cooper Eds. Kaleidoscope: Contemporary and Classic Readings in Education. 12th Edition. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth, 2010.
Weekly Seminar Requirements & Assessed Writing: 1) In preparation for class, please read and post your entries to our bibliography by Sunday night (to wiki page linked below). Each week you will have one of five roles in relationship to the reading and writing. 2) Lesson Plans: In preparation for teaching, complete and bring to class for review a set of lesson plans that you aim to teach and assess in your final paper. Final Paper due Dec 5. See job sheet. Our Monday afternoon seminars will be a time for reflecting, documenting, sharing, discussing and questioning your experiences as a TA. You must arrive prepared to think deeply about the experiences of your week in the classroom through the lens of the assigned readings. This necessitates doing the readings. I expect you to attend each seminar for the entire time scheduled. Please make me aware of extenuating circumstances that could affect your attendance. Inform me via email (ellisl@gvsu.edu) if you are not coming and the reason for your absence.
Observations and Lesson Plans: I will observe you teaching twice. One of the two lessons that I observe should be documented and discussed in your final paper. This should be a lesson that you have planned, designed, pre- and post-assessed, perhaps to be taught during your three-week unit or a shorter unit that your CT assigns. Please create and bring to class your lesson plan for the lesson I will observe the week or two before the observation. When you bring your lesson plans to the class, please send me the lesson plan via e-mail, and let us know some of the goals for this particular observation, usually an issue that we have covered in class. I will focus on these goals in my observations. I will give you some feedback on the lesson plan before you teach it. It is very important that you and your CT discuss your lesson plans as well. Please schedule 30-45 minutes after the lesson for us to discuss your thoughts on how you did and for me to convey some of my impressions.
Grading: 1/3 from me, 1/3 from COE supervisor, 1/3 from CT. My grade will be a holistic evaluation of your work in this seminar (readings, weekly writings, final paper, and observed lessons.) If you would like to negotiate specific weights to these elements of your work, feel free to make an appointment with me to discuss your goals.
